Born in the town of Jonesboro Arkansas, Mary Burch at the age of two moved to California with her parents. Her father divided his time as a Sharecropper in Arkansas and the seasonal harvest in California, so Mary never was able to finish out a school year in one place. At the age of fourteen, she married wanting to escape the life of unrest she had with her father. At sixteen, she needed to find a way of making a living and knew she needed to have an education to consider a career to support her children. The freedom she was so anxious to acquire turned out not to be much better, it was just as hard and painful. At the time, Burch did not realize that her life's journey would help to give her the tenacity to move forward and become an advocate to many.
